Using traditional Native Hawaiian ʻohe kāpala printing tools, the complex swirling of patterns in this piece represent elements of the natural landscape from the mountains to the sea. With the metaphor of the meeting point of saltwater and freshwater where the river meets the ocean, Mele O Nā Kaukani Wai alludes to the need for the integration of Indigenous knowledge and western science to address ongoing global environmental decline.
